The MBA in Professional Arts Management aims to provide students with an integrated and critically aware understanding of Arts Management and assist them in becoming effective Arts Managers.
It offers the opportunity to enable arts practitioners to gain a qualification that offers the road to success as a top class manager within the arts sector or to becoming self-employed. Designed to equip you with advanced business knowledge and understanding of finance, the MBA also gives you the practical skills required to run a business.
There will be the opportunity to exchange knowledge with Irish counterparts, and to discover the nuances between the different cultures.
All MBA programmes start in in September each year, there are no other intakes planned at present, and the courses are taught on the Lampeter campus (no distance learning).
Background
The MBA is run through CORACLE, which is an Interreg 4a Project. Lead by Trinity Saint David University, CORACLE consists of a partnership of:
- University of Wales – Trinity Saint David
- Carmarthenshire County Council
- IT Carlow (Wexford Campus)
- Wexford County Council
- Wexford Arts Centre
All partners have specific roles to play with regard to improving skills and knowledge within the field of art and culture – connecting creativity, including gallery, festival and literary exchanges, & the development of youth theatre and associated skills.
TSD & IT Carlow are the main partners for the MBA.

Admission requirement for a postgraduate programme is a degree or a professional qualification recognized as equivalent. A non graduate may also be admissible provided he/she has held, for a minimum of 2 years, a responsible position which is relevant to the scheme to be pursued or has successfully completed the University’s Masters Entry Programme (MEP)

Short Courses
We are proposing to run a selection of short courses prior to the MBA which are aimed at those of you who may have been out of academia for a while, and need a refresher and for those of you who hold management positions and would like to have a taste of working at HE Level 7. Details of these courses will be made available once the schedule has been agreed.
Programme Aims
The main educational aims of the programme are:
- to enhance lifelong learning skills and personal development to enable students both to work with self direction and originality and to contribute to business and society at large;
- to enable students to undertake advanced study of organisations, their management and the changing external context in which they operate;
- to develop students’ ability to apply knowledge and understanding of business and management to complex issues, both systematically and creatively, to improve business and management practices;
- to enhance students’ transferable skills of research, interpretation, critical evaluation and their ability to turn theory into practice;
- to develop students’ intellectual skills, including critical reasoning, analysis, creativity and reflection;
- to prepare students for a career or career development in professional arts management or related fields by developing professional skills;
- to prepare students for research or further study in the field of professional arts management or related fields;
- to develop master's level knowledge and skills in business and management subjects to enhance students’ employability and the utility of their first discipline;
- to provide students with an integrated and critically aware understanding of Professional Arts Management, and assist them in becoming or developing as effective Arts Managers;
- to provide students with a firm academic foundation in Professional Arts Management as it has developed in Wales, Ireland and the United Kingdom;
- to enable students to undertake advanced study of arts organisations, their management and the changing external context in which they operate;
- to develop students’ to ability to apply knowledge and understanding of business and management in the arts to complex issues, both systematically and creatively, to improve business and management practice in the arts.
Generic Programme Outcomes
Cognitive Skills
- Being able to think critically and be creative: manage the creative processes in self and others; organise thoughts, analyse, synthesise and critically appraise. This includes the capability to identify assumptions, evaluate statements in terms of evidence, detect false logic or reasoning, identify implicit values, define terms adequately and generalise appropriately.
- Being able to solve complex problems and make decisions: establish criteria, using appropriate decision-making techniques including identifying, formulating and solving business problems; and the ability to create, identify and evaluate options; the ability to implement and review decisions.
- The ability to conduct research into business and management issues either individually or as part of a team through research design, data collection, analysis, synthesis and reporting.
- Using information and knowledge effectively: scanning and organising data, synthesising and analysing in order to abstract meaning from information and to share knowledge, gained from critical analysis of research.
Practical Skills
- Effective performance within team environments and the ability to recognise and utilise individuals' contributions in group processes and to negotiate and persuade or influence others; team selection, delegation, development and management.
- Leadership and performance management: selecting appropriate leadership style for different situations; setting targets, motivating, monitoring performance, coaching and mentoring.
- Ability to recognise and address ethical dilemmas and corporate social responsibility issues, applying ethical and organisational values to situations and choices.
Transferable Skills
- Numeracy and quantitative skills including the development and use of relevant business models.
- Effective use of Communication and Information Technology.
- Effective two-way communication: listening, effective oral and written communication of complex ideas and arguments, using a range of media, including the preparation of business reports.
- High personal effectiveness: critical self-awareness, self-reflection and self management; time management; sensitivity to diversity in people and different situations and the ability to continue to learn through reflection on practice and experience.
